Closed. The MGI Library came into existence along with the MGI which was created by an Act of Parliament in 1970. The aims and objectives of the MGI library is to help in the
fulfillment of the aims and objectives of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute
and, hence, to provide library facilities to all those interested in
the cultural, political, economic and social development of Mauritius
and of all such countries which have influenced life in Mauritius.
Membership
The MGI library caters for the needs of general readers, students and researchers.

Fields of Specialisation
The MGI Library is specialized in the following fields of study: Oriental Philosophy, Oriental Religions, Indian Social Sciences, Languages and Linguistics, Fine Arts, Indian Music and Dance, Literature, Indian Historyand Mauritian Studies. Audio Visual materials & Periodicals
The library also has some 150 video tapes and 1,400 audio tapes.The library is subscribed to some 50 periodical titles. Special Collections
Gandhiana Collection This collection has books by and on Mahatma Gandhi. This includes 100 volumes of ‘Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi’. Tagore Collection This collection has books by and on Rabindranath Tagore. Nehru Collection This collection has books on Mauritius and by Mauritian authors. Archival Collection on Indian Immigration The Archival collection of the MGI Library and Archives consists of 2049 original documents pertaining to the Indian Immigration to Mauritius from 1835 to 1910.
Scheme of Classification The library follows the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) Scheme to classify its collection.
Catalogue Both manual card catalogue and computer catalogue are available in the library. The library software also provides an on-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).
Users The users are mostly students following Certificate, Diploma, Degree and Post-graduate courses at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, University of Mauritius and Mauritius Institute of Education. Research Scholars and members of the public above 18 years old also use the library regularly.
