Dear Students and Academics,

Welcome to the School of Performing Arts. The School of Performing Arts was initially known as School of Indian Music and Dance started functioning from the year 1964. In 1975, after the inauguration of MGI, it was integrated into the Mahatma Gandhi Institute as the School of Indian Music and Fine Arts. During the recent restructuring process in November 2006, the Council of the MGI/RTI approved the new formation of the School of Performing Arts with seven departments/sections. With a pool of well-qualified and experienced teachers, dancers and musicians, the School has been catering for education in the field of Indian Music and Dance at various levels in Mauritius and the neighboring countries.
It offers a wide range of courses starting from Hobby and Children’s courses to Certificate, Advanced Certificate, Diploma and Degree as well as Master’s Degree programmes in the main subjects within the Performing Arts. The disciplines offered are:- Vocal Music (Hindustani and Carnatic), Instrumental Music (Sitar, Violin, Tabla, Mridangam) and Dance (Bharata Natyam, Kathak and Kuchipudi). Programmes of studies designed in consultation with renowned Indian experts in their respective fields are at par with other renowned Institutions.

The Faculty members are practicing artistes, musicians and dancers of national repute.  In addition, a selected group of visiting Faculty enriches our  programmes of studies with their expertise. Thus, the students are provided with the opportunity of learning and interacting with eminent and contemporary artistes and academics. The objective of the programmes of studies in the School is to achieve an overall refinement of the student’s perception, not confined to the skills of the profession alone, but also to the intellectual appreciation as well as emotional development to arrive at a level of composite creativity and thought. On the other hand, the School has been enormously contributing to various cultural activities for the benefit of ministries, institutions, socio-cultural organisations and NGOs at national and international levels.  Expert services in the field of Performing Arts are also provided by the School whenever needed by Ministries, institutions and socio-cultural organisations. In line with the mission of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, the School of Performing Arts is deeply committed towards the cause of promotion of Indian culture at large and is working on various academic and professional aspects of Indian Music and Dance to achieve the level of excellence. The School of Performing Arts regularly mounts cultural programmes with the participation of staff and students for the following occasions: Cavadee Festival, Maha Shivaratree,  Independence Day, Ugadi Festival, Annual Day, Ganesh Chaturthi, Divali Festival, Sangeet Utsav and Aapravasi Divas.
