Dr. D. Ramkalawon, Head, Department of Instrumental Music (Stringed) Phone: 4032000 (ext: 2059) The School of Performing Arts, initially known as the School of Indian Music & Dance was catered for by only one Head responsible for all disciplines. A laudable initiative has been the restructuring process recently brought about, gave rise to the formation of seven departments/sections allowing a good functioning in each discipline. This specific Department is actually operating with a Sitar and Violin Section.
Our mission is to enhance the Department by integrating some of the most popular instruments, mainly, the Surbahar, Sarod, Veena etc and ensuring maximum satisfaction to all those joining our courses and providing the very highest quality services possible, maintaining an up-to-date level and meeting up with the upcoming demands in the field. The values governing the Department of Instrumental Music(Stringed)'s development will include the following:Our relationships with society is developing in stronger bonds as we are reaching for a more demanding public, other than those already used to our music styles. An example is, our association with Le Conservatoire De Musique Francois Mitterand which met with great success. We value much similar associations in the near future, aiming at uniting the whole nation. Our Objectives are to recruit more staff, to encourage leader ship sense in every staff member, to favour discipline and self organization, to set up a sucession plan, to ensure that promotion be given at the appropriate time, to encourage diploma and graduate students to join the MGI orchestra team and to ensure that adequate funds and resources are duely provided and to set up a departmental library, including an audio and a video library. We also are planning to organize professional quality programmes with good performing artists in different parts of the island and internationally too.
