In pursuance of MGI's mission to preserve and promote Indian Culture and Philosophy in Mauritius, the Department of Sanskrit, Indian Philosophy and Hindu Theology was set up in 1991 with a view to mounting and running courses in Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy at various levels to prepare in the first instance, teachers to teach these subjects at school level. Since the past fifteen years, the Department has been running courses in the above fields from beginners' level up to Diploma / B.A levels and has trained over 500 students who are able now to undertake teaching of Sanskrit and Indian Philosophy at school level.
With a view to widening its scope and answering to a long-felt need to undertake research in the fields of Indological Studies, the Department has now been expanded into the "School of Indological Studies". With the setting up of this new School the MGI proposes to embark on a number of new courses in Indology at Undergraduate, Post-Graduate and research levels, covering new areas such as Vaastu, Astrology, Philology, Anthropology, Archeology, Ayurveda, Yoga, Meditation, Gemnology, etc. In keeping with Quality Assurance requirements and in order to offer quality education, the School hires the services of subject specialists from abroad on a regular basis which has helped in maintaining a high standard in the courses taught. |
